The Sun, Felmersham

The Sun Inn is a beautiful thatched pub in the quaint village of Felmersham. And easily one of the best pubs in Bedfordshire.

It is a foodie destination in itself. Enjoy the Farmer's Table tasting menu, indulge in an epic Sunday roast or, make a weekend of it, and spend the night in their luxury suite above the pub.

AD disclaimer: I was previously gifted a stay at the Sun. This page includes some content from that stay, as well as other visits I paid for myself. All opinions, as always, are my own.

Once you visit the Sun, you will become a regular. It has a cosy bar at the front, with a fireplace and plenty of beer to enjoy. The dining room is airy and elegant whilst still having a rustic charm. The food is exciting, from the 5 course tasting menu and Sunday lunch to the food served from the Hatch in the garden, available to eat in the bar or takeaway. It also has a huge rambling garden that is a serious sun trap in the warmer months.

The Farmer's table menu offers modern British dining with influences from across the world. Chef and owner Pete uses influences from across his exciting career to put together a monthly menu of seasonal and local produce. The menu is priced at £55pp which is incredibly reasonable for the quality of the meal.

The Sunday lunch offering here is one to add to your list immediately. It is without a doubt Bedfordshire's most generous roast dinner and one of the most exciting. On my recent visit, there was a choice of roasted beef, pork, chicken or goat, as well as a veggie option. The goat is incredibly locally sourced, coming from Wild Berry Farm, just up the road.

The sides all came piled high and intended for sharing, family style. The crispiest potatoes, just like what I'd make at home, creamed spinach, carrots, greens, parsnips and so much gravy. It is a veritable feast, plus that it break the bank at 2 courses for £26. I would get the full 3 courses if I were you, the starters and desserts should not be missed.

And, as if that wasn't enough, after a recent refurb, the Sun now offers boutique, luxury stays in the two rooms above the pub, Dusk & Dawn. Both rooms are beautifully decorated and pay homage to the 17th century building and countryside. The room includes luxury toiletries, drinks in the fridge and on my visit, freshly picked plums and homemade shortbread, still warm from the oven.

For a truly indulgent experience, book the Dawn suite which even comes with a copper bath to soak all your blues away. And believe me when I say, the breakfast the next day will be some of the best you ever have!
