The Compasses is a lovely country pub that has recently been refurbished. It is set in the heart of the tiny picturesque village of Greenfield, in Central Bedfordshire.

I visited for the first time recently to sample the brand new spring menu. I tried nine dishes over the course of the evening and was very impressed with what is on offer.

AD Disclaimer: I was invited to the menu launch press night and asked to share my experience. All opinions, as always, are my own.

As a North Beds gal born and bred, I know surprisingly little about the rest of Bedfordshire. I had never heard of Greenfield, and I certainly didn't know that it contained a pub serving up high end pub classics. Luckily, they asked me to come along to try their new menu so I could venture out and try somewhere completely new.

The pub is spacious yet still cosy and has a fantastic beer garden at the back, somewhere I will definitely be heading back to when we finally crawl out of winter and in to the sunshine again. Spring has certainly sprung at the Compasses though as their new menu pays homage to seasonal ingredients and combines classic and new flavours throughout the menu.

The first dish served was scallops served with guacamole, a mango sauce and crispy bacon. This was my least favourite dish of the night, I did not like the combination of flavours and textures. For me, it just didn't work. However the other two starters we tried were very tasty indeed.

Continuing through the starters, we next tried the Devon Crab pate with sea salt croutes, a very hearty portion and the a generous amount of crab too. And the final starter of the evening was the sage and apple scotch egg with bramley apple chutney, with a perfectly runny yolk in the centre. I would probably want the full scotch egg if I was a paying customer.

My favourite dish of the night was the chicken supreme, I would never normally order chicken on a menu as we eat it so much at home. The chicken was perfectly cooked and served with chorizo, black pudding and peppercorn sauce. Not a combination I've had before but it really worked.

The pistachio crusted lamb rack was a real showstopper and I absolutely ordered the minted mash served with it, I want all my mash minted from now on! It was served with asparagus and a rich red wine sauce. The lamb was cooked well, it could have done with the fat being rendered a little more but it was still very enjoyable.

Desserts were served together as a delicious trio to end the evening. The sticky toffee pudding was my personal favourite, with a moreish banana and rum sauce that I would have liked to drink a pint of. The citrus cheesecake was well made too and very much enjoyed by Jack. My favourite dessert is always crème brûlèe unfortunately it was a little lacking in flavour for me, the sugar top was perfectly crunchy though.

An exciting addition to my pub repertoire and I look forward to going back to try more of the menu. I am very interested to try the lunch menu which includes some doorstop sandwiches that sound outrageously good!

I've heard good things about the Sunday roast too, maybe I should give that a go too...
